DRAWING ON SAND, DRAWING ON WATER
Drawing on Sand, Drawing on Water is rooted in night-walking the Falmouth coastline, in nocturnal phosphorescence along Helford Passage, in associations and resonances that cluster around tidal rhythm.

By morning
the sea has risen
and withdrawn
its rough
inquisitive tongue
scouring the shore.
Under a shuddering sky
rock pours
glistens
opened to the air.
No sign of night’s labour -
the lines are gone
so are the tracks
criss-crossing sand.
The sand itself is gone
slumped mounds of shell
matted kelp
with its seething infestation
lifted lightly away.
Only the rivered
belly of rock
necklaced
with shivering pools.
Wrinkled mirrors
cradle wind-whipped birds
broken shadows
crawling
calling
back and forth
as day draws its breath.
